Item: Table Spoon Description: Dog-nose Hallmark: Guernsey
circa 1765 by IA crowned Dimensions: 187mm long; 45 grams Comments: An
extremely interesting Channel Islands spoon with a mixture of different
styles due to the provincial manufacture of the spoon. The spoon has a
dog-nose shape to the terminal with the addition of two engraved lines to
simulate a trefid end. The double heel to the reverse of the bowl is
typically mid-18thC, however the shape and profile of the stem is more
reminiscent of the late 17thC. Presumably either the maker or his client was
confused about which style was fashionable! The addition of the engraved inscription
in French (translated to "MMG, given by his uncle, PMG")
gives the spoon all round appeal.
The crowned maker's mark is very clearly stamped three times and is
noted in "Old Channel Islands Silver, It's Makers & Marks" by
RH Mayne (page 105) as being circa 1765.
There is some minor wear to the tip of the bowl.
