Item: Christening Cup Description: Two
beaded handled
Hallmark: Guernsey 1784 by Jean Pierre Du Port Dimensions: 60mm
tall; 66mm diameter at top; 48 grams.
Comments: A distinctively Guernsey-made cup
with the bonus of a crisp example of the very rare and highly sought after
duty draw-back mark. This mark was used between 1/12/1784 and 24/7/1785
for silver intended for export. The maker's mark is struck twice (one
over-striking the lion passant). The cup is engraved "Guernsey"
to one side and the contemporary inscription "a MSM don de son Parain"
to the other.
This piece is illustrated in
'Channel Islands Silver' by Richard Mayne, Fig153 (left-side).
