Bacchanalian Pattern
was first designed in 1812 by Stothard and produced by Paul Storr. The
decoration depicts ancient Greeks revelling in intemperate drinking to the
front (a sleeping bacchante occupies the stem, a reclining bacchante feeds
grapes to a panther which turns to look at a youth seated on its back), a wine urn
(a Bacchic trophy) to the reverse and a mask of the Greek God of Wine,
Bacchus, to the heel of the bowl.
