Comments: The engraved rowing related
inscription ("Ch. Ch.Junior Sculls ...1902...H.W JELF")
suggests that this vesta was given as a prize by Christchurch. Fine
condition.
The College Arms are those of Cardinal Wolsey, and are
blazoned: Sable, on a cross engrailed argent, between four leopards'
faces azure a lion passant gules; on a chief or between two Cornish
choughs proper a rose gules barbed vert and seeded or.
Christchurch is considered the most aristocratic of
Oxford's colleges and has produced thirteen British Prime Ministers. It
was founded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525.
