Magdalen College Hallmark: Birmingham 1901 by John William
Barrett Dimensions: 49mm x 38mm; 35g
weight
Comments: An excellent vesta case bearing the
enamelled coat of Arms of Magdalen College Oxford to one side and an
engraved inscription "1st/Half Mile/E.S. Kemp" (probably
presented as a rowing prize) to the obverse. Fine condition (maker's mark
part worn).
The College Arms are adopted from those of it's founder
William of Waynflete's. The description is: Lozengy (or Fusilly) sable
and ermine, on a chief of the first three lilies argent. The lilies
are borrowed from the Arms of Eton College.
Magdalen College was founded in 1448 and is particularly
noted for it's contribution to the sciences. Seven Nobel prize winners are
numbered amongst it's graduates, as are CS Lewis, Oscar Wilde and Dudley
Moore.
