Item: Vesta Case Description: 'Gentleman
in Kharki' Hallmark: Birmingham 1908 by Thomas Bishton Dimensions: 55mm x
40mm; 45g
weight
Comments: The rare subject on this enamelled
vesta case depicts a wounded Boer War soldier standing resolute against
the enemy with his head bandaged and his bag empty of shells.
The picture was drawn by Caton-Woodville, a famous artist in late
Victorian, and Edwardian England, who drew many battle scenes during the
Anglo-Boer War. The soldier and drawing were inspired by Rudyard Kipling
who wrote the poem "The Absent-minded Beggar" in honour
of the common British soldier.
