Item: Card Case Description: Floral & shell fretwork
Hallmark: Birmingham 1827 by Taylor &
Perry Dimensions: 91mm x 64mm rectangular; 60g weight
Comments: A very early card case superbly
decorated with a fretwork of flowers and shell and an applied cartouche to
both sides; crest to one side and initials to the obverse.
The hallmarks are spread in period "Birmingham
box" fashion between the underside of the base and interior of the
hinged cover. Only the very earliest card cases were marked thus following
the tradition of spreading the marks with duty mark, maker and lion
passant to the cover and anchor, maker and date letter to the base. This
method was used on boxes to prevent unscrupulous traders using one fully
marked section with an inferior unmarked section. It soon became obvious
that this practice was not necessary with card cases and full marking of
the base and part marking of the lid became accepted practice.
