Item: Bougie Box Description: Round with
engraved decoration Hallmark: London 1783 by Susanna Barker Dimensions: 51mm diameter;
55g weight
Comments: A particularly good quality, rare
box with secret hinge, crescent-shaped swivel, bright-cut decoration and a
full set of hallmarks (part marks to cover).
Bougie boxes were used to transport sealing wax. The
handles were generally hinged so that they could be folded away when not
in use. The wax would protrude from the aperture in the cover and be
melted over the appropriate document prior to a seal being applied. Most
are plain items with pull-off covers (often lacking the cutting swivel)
and have just a part set of hallmarks. This is one of the finest examples
we have had in stock.
