Item: Teaspoon Description: Picture-back
'British Hearts of Oak' Hallmark: London circa 1765 Dimensions: 120mm long
Comments: A rare picture back spoon with the
word "BRITISH" above a heart symbol amongst acorns and oak
leaves. The spoon is in good condition apart from the picture which is a
little worn (although better than the image suggest as all the features
are still visible). There are contemporary baptismal initials
"A*P" to the reverse terminal.
The song "Hearts of Oak" was written by Dr
William Boyce in celebration of the British naval victories at Quebec and
Quiberon Bay in 1759. The song has since become the official march of the
Royal Navy. This spoon was likely made in celebration of those victories
and subsequent song.
