Antique Silver Spoons

Item: Sugar Nips Description: Acorn grips, falcon crest Hallmark: London circa 1730 by Francis Harache Dimensions: 118mm long; 30g weight

Comments: A rare pair of tea tongs with a good engraved crest to the central hinge. One of the acorn bowls is struck with maker mark only (incuse "FH" surmounted by a coronet), the other is struck with maker and 1740-55 lion passant. This particular maker's mark is not shown in Grimwade, but assuming that there is a family connection with the important Huguenot makers Pierre I and Pierre II, the surmounting coronet makes sense. This mark has similarly been attributed by Dr Shlosberg in "Eighteenth Century Silver Tea Tongs" and ten had been noted at the time the book was published.
