Antique Silver Spoons

OLD SILVER SPOONS OF ENGLAND by Norman Gask

Gask’s book is almost entirely devoted to pre-1700 spoons, and is referred to as a classic. It is illustrated throughout with black and white plates, with more or less every style of spoon known, including some very rare examples. It is very detailed in it’s descriptions, with some of the author’s own memories and anecdotes. The final chapter very briefly discusses post 1700 spoons, but does have two interesting plates illustrating caddy spoons plus one plate for punch ladles.

I found the book rather heavy going and too whimsical for my taste. The prices are obviously way out-of-date, but the illustrations are comprehensive, and as always with reference books it only takes one piece of remembered information when buying a spoon to make the book worthwhile.
