SPOONS AROUND THE WORLD
by Rainwater & Felger
When I first picked up this book, written and published in the USA, I was hoping for a good account of old spoons from all over the World. It does tackle this subject, but broadly, and in my opinion not very interestingly, for the first 27 pages. There is quite a strong 40-page chapter on Apostle and figural end spoons, before an in-depth look at certain speciality spoons. Caddy spoon collectors will be mortified to learn that in addition to the "hand" and "jockey cap" illustrations – albeit 1960’s reproductions, the majority are of the souvenir type including "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary" and "Witch of Wookey"!
The majority (about 300 pages) of this book is concerned with souvenir spoons, and is probably as good as any on the market covering this subject, however it is unlikely to hold the interest of collectors of old silver spoons for long.
