INTERNATIONAL HALLMARKS ON SILVER by Tardy Usually referred to by its authors’ name, this is the most comprehensive book on worldwide hallmarks. All countries that have had a marking system are included, and it is particularly good for French and Russian marks. Due to the nature of its’ task, Tardy attempts to cover a huge area, and is therefore quite difficult to use and has gaps of information. When attempting to trace an unknown mark, one tries to match it up with the indices, which will the direct you to the relevant page and country. Unfortunately, the mark is all too often not shown, and the research becomes inconclusive. The lack of maker’s marks is understandable, but it would have been a good idea to show examples of the full set of marks one might expect to find, rather than dealing with each mark separately. Nevertheless it is still the best book available covering worldwide hallmarks, and when the mark you are searching for is illustrated, a whoop of joy results!
