Item: Toddy Ladle Description: Whalebone handle,
bead edge and bright-cut engravings Hallmark: London
circa 1780 by Hester Bateman Dimensions: 360mm long Comments: A
fine example of a toddy ladle by the "Queen of English
Silversmiths". The bead edged bowl is typical of Hester Bateman's style
of the early 1780's and the attention to detail is excellent - note the
bright-cut engraving along the lower stem and terminal ferrule. The weight
of silver is such that only two marks were necessary - the lion passant to
reverse of the stem and the maker's mark to the base of the bowl.
