Antique Silver

Item: Sweet Basket Description: Pedestal foot with piercing and bright-cut engraving Hallmark: London 1791 by Peter & Ann Bateman Dimensions: 170mm long x 200 mm high (top of handle); 225 g weight

Comments: This is an absolutely fabulous piece of Bateman silver. This large and elegant sweet or sugar basket would look magnificent as a table centrepiece, it just shimmers with quality. The octagonal boat-shaped design of the top section has been beautifully produced and the addition of the wavy edge made a tricky task for the glass blower; but the blue glass liner fits beautifully and shows off the silver to it's best. The pedestal foot is also octagonal in shape and the reed border on the base is repeated around the top edge and along the hinged swing handle. The engraved and pierced design around the basket is typical of the Bateman workshop with it's flower head roundels and trailing floral swags. One of the panels omits the roundel and instead an engraved crest of an anchor can be found. The crisp hallmarks can be found to the underside and the shaped swing handle is appropriately marked with a lion passant. Superb condition and patina throughout.
