Item: Straining Spoon Description: Onslow pattern Hallmark: London 1780 by Hester Bateman
Dimensions: 168mm; 33 g weight Comments: This is a beautiful
Georgian dessert spoon by the "Queen of English Silversmiths". The piercing
is typical of mote spoons dating from the mid-18th century with crosslets,
stars and scrolls. It is possible
that the piercing is later, but there is also every chance that the spoon
was originally adorned in this way. Either way, the pierced spoon's probable
use would have been as a church strainer spoon (for removing motes from the
communion wine).
The condition is excellent with a full bowl, original Onslow
terminal and a clear set of hallmarks.
