Item: Caddy Spoon (double duty) Description: Bright-cut
engraved with shield-shaped bowl Hallmark: Birmingham 1797 by
Joseph Taylor Dimensions: 87mm length
Comments: An excellent example of a hallmark
illustrating the rare double struck duty mark. Duty on silver was doubled
in 1797 to help pay for the Napoleonic Wars, in order for the assay
offices to identify which pieces had paid this extra duty, the provincial
offices stamped the mark twice. The spoon is an attractive example of a
classic Joseph Taylor form.
