Antique Silver Spoons

Item: Caddy Spoon Description: Jockey Cap Hallmark: Birmingham 1798 by Thomas Willmore Dimensions:  56 mm length

Comments: An early and unusual version of the jockey cap theme. This spoon is expertly made with all over fluted decoration. It has a particularly large peak.

See plate 95a "Caddy Spoons: An Illustrated Guide" by J Norie, for an identical unmarked example. Norie tentatively ascribed this spoon to Thomas Willmore c.1801 presumably having seen an identical example with these marks.

This example is dated one year after the first jockey caps appeared and therefore suggests that Thomas Willmore should be included alongside Joseph Taylor and Elizabeth Morley as the earliest exponents of this form.
