Item: Toastrack Description: The Caduceus; 6
slice Hallmark: London 1927 Britannia Standard by Sebastian
Garrard Dimensions: 165mm x 107mm rectangular; 382 grams
(12.25 troy ounces).
Comments: A superb quality toast rack in the scarce
Britannia Standard silver (a purer form of silver than Sterling Standard).
This large and heavy toastrack stands on four cast shell feet and bears a
motif to both sides depicting the Caduceus. The makers of this piece were
Garrards of Albemarle Street London who were (and still are) the Crown
Jewellers (by appointment to the King or Queen).
The Caduceus (or Wand of Hermes) consists of two serpents entwined
around a staff and surmounted by a pair of wings. It is used a symbol of
medicine by the medical profession all over the world and as the insignia
of the Medical Corps of the US Army. This piece was presumably
commissioned by an eminent member of the profession.
