Item: Caddy Spoon Description: Beaded handle with
fluted bowl Hallmark: London circa 1775-80 by Walter Tweedie Dimensions:
89mm length Comments: A very early caddy
ladle in excellent condition. The hallmarks on the spoon are bottom-struck
and are the appropriate marks (lion passant and maker) for a small
pre-1780 made spoon. The date and form of this spoon are the earliest type
of caddy spoon that you will find and this is an excellent example.
The attribution of the maker WT is subject to speculation.
The lack of a date letter, the fact that the assay office registers around
this time were destroyed and the prevalence of possible candidates with
the initials WT make the identification process. In addition to Walter
Tweedie, other potential candidates working during the 1770's are: William
Turton (Grimwade 3341), William Tant (3904), William Tuite (3339) and
William Taylor (3340).
