Antique Silver

Item: Caddy Spoon Description: Bright-cut engraved handle; shell bowl Hallmark: London 1785 by Thomas Liddiard Dimensions: 78mm long

Comments: This is a standard Bateman family caddy spoon with the diagnostic shell shaped bowl and bright-cut handle. Please see photo below for a comparative photograph showing this spoon next to a similar Hester Bateman spoon that we currently have in stock.

The spoon would have been bought in from the Bateman's by the retailer Thomas Liddiard and the makers' mark over-struck with his own. It is possible to observe the curls at the base of the "H" on the underlying mark where it has not been completely obliterated. Over-striking was standard practice for a retailer where they wanted to hide the identity of the actual maker.
