Item: Caddy Spoon Description: Old England Pattern
Hallmark: London 1837 by S Haynes & D Cater Dimensions:
97mm long Comments: This is a lovely
quality caddy spoon in a highly sought after pattern. This rare pattern
features symbolic plants of Great Britain (roses, shamrock, thistle,
acorns etc).
See Norie plate 14d for another example. Norie erroneously
suggests in the text on page 12 of "Caddy Spoons: An Illustrated
Guide" that Old England pattern was made to commemorate the
coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837, when it was in fact designed to
celebrate the coronation of King William IV in 1830. The date of this
spoon however would suggest that there was a resurgence in popularity for
the pattern when the new Queen came to the throne.
