130 piece Rat-Tail Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1933 by William Hutton & Sons Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1890’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to it’s elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, whilst the spoons have the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl. The Maker William Hutton & Sons of Sheffield are a long established and very large scale producer, starting life in 1800 and it’s name is still trading today. They produced some of the premier Sheffield made silver hollow-ware and flatware. The Service This extensive canteen is beautifully presented in a blue baize lined box. All the pieces are in fabulous condition and have not been engraved. Each piece has a good solid feel in the hand. A major plus for this canteen is the presence of twenty four dessert knives and the same number of dessert forks. The presence of these pieces will give the owner extra flexibility as they can use a dozen pairs for both starter and dessert courses. The twelve table knives are new and identical matches in style to the dessert knives. The twelve table forks are by a different maker but are an otherwise exact match. A good range of serving items are present and the entire canteen is in wonderful condition. Components and Measurements This 130-piece service consists of the following:
Total weight of weighable silver 4920 grams (158.2 tr. oz.) This figure excludes the thirty six knives and five carving pieces. Condition Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and spoon bowls retain their thick tips. There are neither engravings nor erasures. The canteen appears to have been seldom used (probably only for special occasions) and is therefore in fine condition throughout. Presentation This canteen benefits from being presented in it's original wooden box with individual slots for each piece on a two colour blue baize background. The canteen has been attractively laid out. There are three drawers with a lockable gate (key present) to either side of the box for added security. There is a brass escutcheon to the top of the box which has not been engraved and a brass carrying handle to both sides. Price: SOLD Ref. No.: GS/7636 As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
