79 piece Queen's Pattern Canteen, London 1863-67 by George Adams Queen's Pattern Queen’s Pattern was first in fashion in the 1820’s and was probably named in honour of Queen Caroline of Brunswick (King George IV’s wife). There are several variants of the pattern, this canteen being in the most popular being with "anthemion heel". This term relates to the motif on the reverse side of the bowl and tines. The highly ornate decoration found on Queen’s Pattern demands that each piece is made with a thick gauge of silver. The pieces in this service are indicative of that quality, e.g. the table spoons and forks weigh over 3 troy ounces each. The Maker All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Chawner & Company and marked with the "GA" mark of it's owner - George W Adams. Chawner & Company were the premier silver flatware making outfit of the 19th Century. They produced some of the finest spoons and forks from their Hosier Lane workshops. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the finest quality likely to be encountered. A brief biography of Chawner and Company can be found by clicking this link. The vast majority of the spoons and forks in this service date from 1863-67, although other pieces date from between 1846 and 1876. The knives are modern replacements and are the best available due to the scarcity of Victorian knives in good order. These knives are hallmarked London 1949 by C J Vander (table size) and Sheffield 1949 by Mappin & Webb. The makers of these knives were amongst the finest and the quality complements the Victorian spoons and forks. Components and Measurements This 79-piece service consists of the following:
