Antique Silver

84-piece Rat-Tail Pattern Canteen, early 20thC by mixed makers

Hanoverian Rattail Pattern

Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1890’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to it’s elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, whilst the spoons have the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl.

The Service

This is a mixed maker canteen, although the silver is primarily made up from pieces by either Mappin & Webb (18 pieces) or the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Limited (18 pieces). The canteen is composed of good matching sets of six or straight sets of twelve (see below). The quality of the pieces is excellent, with each piece having a good solid feel.

The knives offered with this service are bone handled with stainless steel blades dating to the early 20thCentury. Alternatively, we would be happy to exchange these for new silver handled knives if preferred (24 plain knives for £600 or pistol handled knives for £750 extra).
