100-piece Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1935 by Walker & Hall Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1890’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to it’s elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, and the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl/tines. The Maker Beginning life in the mid 1800’s Walker & Hall were one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of silver and plate from the late 19th Century and first half of the 20th Century. The original partnership, including George Walker, traded as Walker & Co.. Henry Hall joined the partnership in 1848, the firm was renamed Walker, Coulson & Hall, before becoming just Walker & Hall in 1853. The name is still used for retail outlets, although they were taken over by Mappin & Webb in the 1960’s. They were top quality Sheffield based, machine-made producers of all major flatware patterns and canteens and their products are easily recognised by their distinctive W&H mark within a flag. The Service This extensive canteen is beautifully presented in a green baize lined box. The box has items fitted in to the lid, top shelf and two drawers. The drawers are kept in place, whilst the box is not in use, by two hinged gate legs. The cover is fitted with an inlaid brass cartouche (no engravings) and the drawer pulls and two side carrying handles are also made from brass. The baize is a little worn on one or two edges but considering it's seventy years is still in fine overall condition. All the pieces were made by Walker & Hall with the exception of seven teaspoons that are hallmarked London 1933. The silver is in fabulous condition and none of the pieces have been engraved. Each piece has a good solid and satisfying feel in the hand. The twenty four knives and five piece carving set have bone handles and stainless steel blades. A good range of serving items are present. Components and Measurements This -piece service consists of the following:
Total weight of weighable silver 3815 grams (122.7 tr. oz.) This figure excludes the twenty four knives and carving set. Condition Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and spoon bowls retain their thick tips. There are neither engravings nor erasures. The canteen appears to have been seldom used (probably only for special occasions) and is therefore in fine condition throughout. Presentation This canteen benefits from being presented in it's original wooden box. Price: RESERVED Ref.
