55-piece Old English Engraved Pattern Canteen, London 1872 by George Adams We are pleased to be able to offer a rare opportunity to purchase a beautifully decorated Old English Pattern half canteen. There are seven pieces per six place settings with the addition of several useful serving items. Old English Engraved Pattern Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and has always been a very favoured pattern ever since due to it’s elegant and simple form. During the late 18thC engraved decoration was added to the pattern to break up the plain lines. These variants are not often seen during the 19th Century, however Chawner & company produced this very attractive style. The Maker All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Chawner & Company and marked with the "GA" mark of it's owner (George W Adams). Chawner & Company were the premier silver flatware making outfit of the 19th Century. They produced some of the finest spoons and forks from their Hosier Lane workshops in London. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the best quality likely to be encountered. A brief biography of Chawner and Company can be found by clicking this link. The Service This extensive canteen is attractively presented in a kenized box ((tarnish resistant). All the pieces are in fabulous mint condition and are engraved with an attractive letter "L" in script. Each piece has a lovely solid feel in the hand. There are twelve knives of the same length that could be used for any course. They are slightly different style to the spoons and forks and are stamped "Gorham Sterling" (made in USA). These knives should be a considered a bonus as they are not truly considered in the cost of the canteen, but they are such a good complement that we felt it was prudent to include them. They do not bear the engraved letter. Components and Measurements This 55-piece service consists of the following:
Total weight of weighable silver 1759 grams (56.6 tr. oz.) This figure excludes the twelve knives. Condition Excellent. There are neither engraved initials nor erasures. Presentation This canteen benefits from being presented in a Kenized box. The external fabric is an attractive mottled brown leatherette and the brown interior has anti-tarnish qualities. The cover can be rolled back when in use or zipped up and closed by way of press studs. Extra space is available under the knives for additional storage. If you prefer, the box can be exchanged for navy blue anti-tarnish cutlery rolls. As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
