48-piece King's Husk Pattern Canteen, London 1840-44 by George Adams We are pleased to be able to offer an early Victorian period same maker canteen in a highly popular design. The quality of this set is outstanding and forty pieces have always been together as part of the same service. The additional eight items are equal in quality. There are four pieces per twelve place settings with knives and serving items available on request . King's Husk Pattern King's Husk pattern is a very popular variation of the King's shape group of patterns. It maintains the outline of handle common throughout this group, but has a more restrained form of decoration. It tends to be of the very highest quality in terms of weight and thus fetches a premium when found. Canteens in this pattern are relatively scarce and in very high demand. The Maker All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Chawner & Company and marked with the "GA" mark of it's owner (George W Adams). Chawner & Company were the premier silver flatware making outfit of the 19th Century. They produced some of the finest spoons and forks from their Hosier Lane workshops in London. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the best quality likely to be encountered. A brief biography of Chawner and Company can be found by clicking this link. The Service This same maker canteen is superb condition with the majority of pieces (42) dating from 1844 and the remainder from 1840/41. All the pieces are in fabulous condition with very crisp decoration. Forty pieces are not engraved (no erasures) and eight items bear an engraved crest to the front terminals (see photos). Each piece has a good hefty feel in the hand - both table forks and table spoons weigh in excess of 100 grams per piece - this is a sure sign of the highest quality. Knives were originally supplied separately and we will be happy to advise the availability of knives on request. Components and Measurements This 48-piece service consists of the following:
Total weight of weighable silver 3940 grams (126.7tr. oz.) This figure excludes the twenty four knives. Condition Excellent. The decoration is very crisp throughout, The fork tines are equal in length and the spoon bowls are unworn. Presentation This service is offered loose (i.e. as it comes), however, anti-tarnish cutlery rolls are available on request.
