64-piece Fiddle Pattern Canteen, London 1828 by William Eaton We are offering for sale an extremely rare opportunity to purchase a straight (same date and maker) Georgian fiddle pattern full canteen. Rarely do you find services still intact from this very early date. The canteen comprises five pieces per twelve place settings with the bonus of four serving items. The quality of the canteen is second to none with a hefty weight of silver used throughout. Each piece bears the same engraved crest testimony to it's wealthy heritage. Knives can be added at a later date (they were originally supplied separately) and we shall be happy to advise. Fiddle Pattern Fiddle Pattern was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain. It was by far the most popular pattern from 1810 until 1880. Production was largely discontinued in 1914, as the original dies for hand wrought fiddle pattern were destroyed during the First World War. As the pattern has rarely been made since, the design is distinctively 19th Century and is extremely popular today for people wishing to have antique cutlery. The Maker William Eaton was a specialist spoon and fork maker working in London from 1813 to 1845. His widow, Elizabeth continued the family business after his death and was partnered by their son John in 1854. The Eaton's workshop produced some of the finest silver flatware of the 19th Century and vied with Chawner & Company for the top spot from 1815 through to 1865 when the Eaton's factory was taken over by Henry Holland & Son. This canteen is equal to that statement with a good gauge of silver used throughout. The Service This fiddle pattern canteen is a rare George IV survivor, with all pieces (except two) being of the same date and by the same maker. One dessert fork and one teaspoon are hallmarked at a later date, although in all other ways they are identical (including the crest). Each piece bears the same superbly engraved crest. The crest is located to the front side of the spoon terminals and reverse side of the fork terminals as was standard at this time, when forks were laid on the table with their tines pointing downwards. This crest depicts a Griffin (front half is an eagle and the rear a lion) with a man's head - demonstrating the dominance of this particular family over others.. Components and Measurements This 30-piece service consists of the following:
Total Weight: 3685 grams (118.5 troy ounces) Condition Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and spoon bowls retain their thick tips. Each piece is engraved with the identical Griffin crest to it's terminal. The service is in it's original condition with a fine patina.
