60-piece Fiddle Pattern Canteen, London 1828-44 by William Eaton We are offering for sale a rare opportunity to purchase a Georgian fiddle pattern canteen. All the pieces in this canteen were made by the same maker and it comprises five pieces per twelve place settings. Each piece is in superb polished condition with neither engraved initials nor crests. Fiddle Pattern Fiddle Pattern was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain. It was by far the most popular pattern from 1810 until 1880. Production was largely discontinued in 1914, as the original dies for hand wrought fiddle pattern were destroyed during the First World War. As the pattern has rarely been made since, the design is distinctively 19th Century and is extremely popular today for people wishing to have antique cutlery. The Maker William Eaton was a specialist spoon and fork maker working in London from 1813 to 1845. His widow, Elizabeth continued the family business after his death and was partnered by their son John in 1854. The Eaton's workshop produced some of the finest silver flatware of the 19th Century and vied with Chawner & Company for the top spot from 1815 through to 1865 when the Eaton's factory was taken over by Henry Holland & Son. This canteen is equal to that statement with a good gauge of silver used throughout. The Service Each piece was made by William Eaton and bears his mark alongside the London hallmarks. The canteen is made up from a variety of sets with different dates and each item is in excellent polished condition. The spoon bowls are unworn and the fork tines are full length. The table spoons and table forks are particularly heavy in weight. We have a selection of serving items in stock and can augment the size of the canteen with additional pieces. Further details can be provided on request. Knives can be purchased separately (they were originally supplied separately) and we shall be happy to advise.
