48-piece Fiddle & Thread Pattern Canteen, London 1840-74 by George Adams We are offering for sale a rare opportunity to purchase a same maker Victorian Fiddle & Thread Pattern canteen with no engravings to the fronts. All the pieces in this canteen were made by the same maker and it comprises four pieces per twelve place settings. Each piece is in superb polished condition. Knives can be added at a later date (they were originally supplied separately) and we shall be happy to advise. Fiddle & Thread Pattern The fiddle shape was the primary form of flatware in 19th Century Britain and Fiddle & Thread Pattern was one of the most popular variants. The restrained decoration of Fiddle & Thread Pattern treads the fine line between elegant/simple and ornate/decorative. The pattern is double struck (i.e. on the front and reverse sides of each item). The Maker All the pieces within this canteen were made by Chawner & Company and marked with the "GA" mark of it's owner (George W Adams). Chawner & Company were the premier silver flatware making outfit of the 19th Century. They produced some of the finest spoons and forks from their Hosier Lane workshops in London. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the best quality likely to be encountered. A brief biography of Chawner and Company can be found by clicking this link. The Service Each piece was made by George Adams and bears his mark alongside the London hallmarks. The canteen is made up from a variety of sets with different dates and each item is in excellent polished condition. The spoon bowls are unworn and the fork tines are full length. None of the spoons bear engravings and only a small number of forks bear crests to the reverse sides. None show engravings when placed upwards on the table.
