Antique Silver

168-piece Old English Thread Pattern Canteen, London 1825 by William Johnson & 1829 by Emanuel Brothers

We are offering for sale a remarkable opportunity to purchase a Georgian Old English Thread pattern double canteen. It comprises seven pieces per twenty four place settings. Each piece is in superb original condition with all the spoons and forks bearing the same engraved crest. This is a first rate service and is highly recommended.

Old English Thread Pattern

This highly sought after pattern is the premier version of the elegant Old English Pattern. The gauge of silver used lifts it to a greater status than the standard pattern. Canteens in Old English Thread are not common and are invariably engraved with the crest of the original owners.

The Service

The spoons and forks were all made in the late 1820's by one of two makers: William Johnson (WJ) or Morris & Michael Emanuel (ME/ME). Presumably after the original service was bought additional items were required just four years later. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the best quality likely to be encountered.

All the flatware bear the same engraved crest of a griffin. As per the style of the Georgian period (where forks were laid facing down on the table), the crests are to the front of the spoons and the reverse of the forks.

All the knives were made in Sheffield by William Yeats (WY) between 1964 and 1973. They are fitted with Sheffield made stainless steel blades. These do not bear the engraved crest but make ideal accompaniments to the spoons and forks.
