Antique Silver

56-piece Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Canteen, London 1880 - 1900 by Aldwinckle & Slater

and Elkington & Company

Hanoverian Rattail Pattern

Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1880’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to it’s elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, whilst the spoons have the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl.

The Service

All the pieces within this service are in fabulous original condition with a fine patina and a matching engraved crest of a lion emerging from a crown to the reverse side of each piece. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional London manner and has a good solid feel and balance in the hand. The pieces bear the marks of either Elkington & Company or Aldwinckle & Slater. The latter were the premier specialists in silver flatware at the end of the Victorian period and we suspect that Elkington were the retailers and Aldwinckle & Slater actually produced all the silver in this service.

The sixteen table knives are early 20th Century in date and have simulated bone handles with stainless steel blades. These can be exchanged for silver handled knives on request.
