99-piece Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Canteen, London 1878 - 1924

We are pleased to be offering an excellent quality late Victorian/early 20th Century Hanoverian Rattail canteen contained within a good quality, fitted wooden box, together with 24 boxed silver handled knives..

The service provides for eight items per 12 place settings and all the spoons and forks were hand-wrought in the traditional manner within the best London silversmithing workshops.

Hanoverian Rattail Pattern

Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1880’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to it’s elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, whilst the spoons have the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl.

The Service

The service is composed of hand-wrought Hanoverian Rattail pieces from a mix of the premier London specialist flatware makers.  The makers represented include Chawner & Company (George Adams), Aldwinckle & Slater, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd., and Jackson & Fullerton. Most of the sets are in straight runs of 12 e.g. the dessert forks are all London 1882 by Aldwinckle & Slater and the dessert spoons are all London 1913 by Jackson & Fullerton. The sets all match beautifully and fit together well - only the hallmarks will tell them apart.

A fantastic quality soup ladle and matching pair of sauce ladles are also included.

The twenty four table knives are new with hallmarked silver Hanoverian style handles and are fitted with stainless steel blades. The knives are presented in sets of six within blue cardboard boxes. They are perfect complements to the flatware service.

All the pieces within this service are in fabulous polished condition and have a good solid feel and balance in the hand.

Presentation

This service is beautifully presented within an oak canteen. Each piece has it's own individual slot. The silver is not original to the canteen, but the pieces fit perfectly. The box is lined with green baize and has two brass carrying handles. There is a lock without a key - a good locksmith could easily make one if required.

The knives are presented within blue cardboard boxes. Three of these boxes will sit neatly inside the wooden canteen box.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
