42-piece Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Canteen, London 1913 by William Hutton & Sons We are offering for sale a lovely quality Hanoverian Rattail canteen complete with highly sought after 3-pronged forks. It comprises seven pieces per six place settings. Each piece is in superb original condition with no engravings. Hanoverian Rattail Pattern Hanoverian Rattail was first in fashion between 1710 and 1730 and has been reproduced since the 1890’s. It was the first flatware pattern in the UK to be used for complete canteens. Due to it’s elegant lines and proportions it has continued to enjoy great popularity and is probably the most sought after traditional pattern. The front of each piece has a distinctive central ridge, whilst the spoons have the trademark rattail extension to the handle on the reverse side of the bowl. The Maker William Hutton & Sons of Sheffield are a long established and very large scale producer, starting life in 1800 and it’s name is still trading today. They produced some of the premier Sheffield made silver hollow-ware and flatware. The Service This same maker flatware service has a lovely feeling of quality and includes 3-pronged forks. All pieces bear the date letter for 1913 with the exception of the dessert spoons which are original to the service but hallmarked slightly earlier. This form of fork were used in the early to mid-18th century as part of Hanoverian Rattail canteens. The forks in this service are faithful to the originals. The twelve modern Hanoverian Pattern knives bear the distinctive central ridge down each handle and have stainless steel blades. They are hallmarked Sheffield 1959 by Alexander Clarke & Company and make lovely accompaniments to the spoons and forks. Components and Measurements This 42-piece service consists of the following:
Total weight of weighable silver 1610 grams (51.8tr. oz.) This figure excludes the twelve knives. Condition Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and spoon bowls retain their thick tips. As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
