28-piece King's Pattern Canteen, London 1897 by Charles Boyton We are offering for sale an
excellent twenty-eight piece flatware service of King's Pattern King's Pattern is the most well known and popular decorative flatware pattern. It was based on an 18th century French design and became fashionable amongst the wealthy in the early years of the 19th Century. The design encompasses a shell to both sides of the handle terminal and reverse of the bowl, scrolls down the handle shaft with a honeysuckle motif to the centre. The double-struck nature of the pattern (i.e. pattern on both sides) ensures that a good gauge of silver was used in manufacture and therefore the majority of London-made pieces in this pattern have a hefty feel in the hand. The best quality King's Pattern was made in London, where it was hand-wrought and has a high relief to the decoration. Machine made King's Pattern from Sheffield is lower in relief and generally has a less interesting appearance and lighter weight. The Maker All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Charles Boyton and marked with his "CB" mark. The company of Charles Boyton traces it's history back to 1807 when Charles Boyton I was apprenticed as a spoonmaker to William Seaman. He entered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1825. This canteen dates from the final years of his son, Charles Boyton II who obtained his freedom in 1853 whilst working with his father. He eventually took over the running of the firm and his two sons joined him, with Charles III becoming head in 1899 following the death of his father. The Service This is a fine quality 6 place settings canteen with all the pieces in excellent condition and having a good solid feel in the hand. One of the benefits of buying a same maker canteen is the future possibility of adding pieces that are an almost exact match in terms of size, proportions and pattern. A particularly good feature for this set is the presence of the soup spoons: before about 1890 the large table spoons were used for supping soup. In the early 1900's Sheffield makers began to manufacture the modern round bowled soup spoon. The soup spoons in this canteen are in between table and dessert size but retain the distinctive oval bowls of the 19thC - they are only found with London made flatware from the turn of the 19th/20th Century and are a very rare bonus for this set. Each spoon and fork has extremely crisp double-struck decoration and bears a finely engraved Gothic block letter "P". Components and Measurements This 28-piece service consists of the following:
Total weight of weighable silver 2291 grams (73.7 tr. oz.) Condition Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and the spoon bowls are unworn with thick bowl tips. Presentation This canteen is offered loose, however it can be supplied in anti-tarnish cutlery rolls on request. Price: SOLD Ref.
