34-piece Rose Pattern Canteen, London 1868 by Thomas Smily

We are offering for sale a fabulous thirty four piece flatware service of  the rare and highly prized Rose Pattern. The canteen is a straight set with all the spoons and forks being made by the same maker. The pieces within this canteen were all hand-wrought by one of the premier London based specialist spoon and fork makers of the period and have a really hefty feel about them. They are all top quality pieces with high relief decorationAny canteen with table spoons and forks weighing over 100 grams each is a sure sign of quality.

Rose Pattern

Rose Pattern is rare and has a beautiful design. It's form is based on the "King's Pattern Shape", but instead of the usual shell and scroll motifs has a trailing rose instead to both sides. The reverse side of the forks tines and spoon bowls are decorated in a similar fashion to Queen's Pattern with an anthemion motif.

The Maker

All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Thomas Smily and marked with his "TS" mark Thomas Smily was born in 1827 and was the son of a specialist spoonmaker - William Smily. He was apprenticed to his father and obtained his freedom in 1848. At first he worked in partnership with his father and brother, but took over the latter's business following his death in 1858.
