24-piece King's Pattern Canteen, London 1908 by George Jackson & David Fullerton We
are offering for sale an excellent twenty-four piece flatware service
of King's Pattern King's Pattern is the most well known and popular decorative patterns. It was based on an 18th century French design and became fashionable amongst the wealthy in the early years of the 19th Century. The design encompasses a shell to both sides of the handle terminal and reverse of the bowl, scrolls down the handle shaft with a honeysuckle motif to the centre. The double-struck nature of the pattern (i.e. pattern on both sides) ensures that a good gauge of silver was used in manufacture and therefore the majority of London-made pieces in this pattern have a hefty feel in the hand. The best quality King's Pattern was made in London, where it was hand-wrought and has a high relief to the decoration. Machine made King's Pattern from Sheffield is lower in relief and generally has a less interesting appearance and lighter weight. The Maker The firm of Jackson & Fullerton were one of the premier silversmithing companies of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The company produced some of the finest quality silver flatware of the period in most of the traditional patterns. They were unusual in having their workshops in Bristol (hand-wrought in the London tradition); sending their goods to London for hallmarking. They also maintained London showrooms. They were the continuation of the large Bristol establishment of Josiah Williams & Company. George Maudsley Jackson entered into partnership in 1883 with Josiah Williams. Following the death of Williams, George Jackson went into a new partnership with David Fullerton in 1897 with the maker’s mark “GJ” over “DF”. The partnership flourished until 1915, when Fullerton carried the company on in it’s former name of Josiah Williams & Co. The
six table spoons are earlier in date and were all made by Francis Higgins. This
company vied for the top spot as the finest flatware makers of the 19th Century
and these spoons are testament to that fact. The Service All the pieces in this 6 place settings canteen are in excellent polished condition and have a good solid feel in the hand. Each spoon and fork has a good hefty weight and extremely crisp double-struck decoration. The pieces have the bonus of being free from engraved initials/crests and have not been erased of previous engravings. The twelve forks and six dessert spoons are all hallmarked London 1908 by Jackson & Fullerton and the six table spoons are hallmarked London 1869 by Francis Higgins. Knives were traditionally sold separately from spoon and forks and we shall be happy to advise and supply knives as required. In addition, we can supply serving items on request. Components and Measurements This 24-piece service consists of the following:
The total weight of silver is 1958 grams (63 tr. oz.) Condition Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and the spoon bowls are unworn. The canteen has a mix of dates and therefore some pieces are blank whereas others bear a combination of engraved initials and crests. As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
