Antique Silver

142-piece  King's Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1918-20 by Walker & Hall

We are offering for sale a rare opportunity to purchase an "all singing, all dancing" boxed service in King's Pattern.

There are 92 pieces of silver flatware in King's Pattern and 50 complementing fish and fruit eaters with either bone or mother-of pearl handles. The canteen benefits from having no engravings and is in excellent original condition throughout.

King's Pattern

King's Pattern is the most well known and popular decorative patterns. It was based on an 18th century French design and became fashionable amongst the wealthy in the early years of the 19th Century. The design encompasses a shell to both sides of the handle terminal and reverse of the bowl, scrolls down the handle shaft with a honeysuckle motif to the centre.

The Maker

Walker & Hall have been one of the most well known silver makers in the UK since the 1880's and continue to be so today. Beginning life in the mid 1800’s Walker & Hall were one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of silver and plate from the late 19th Century and first half of the 20th Century. The original partnership, including George Walker, traded as Walker & Co.. Henry Hall joined the partnership in 1848, the firm was renamed Walker, Coulson & Hall, before becoming just Walker & Hall in 1853.

The name is still used for retail outlets, although they were taken over by Mappin & Webb in the 1960’s. They were top quality machine-made producers of all major flatware patterns and canteens and their products are easily recognised by their distinctive W&H mark within a flag.

The Service

All the pieces in this 12 place settings canteen are in excellent condition with double-struck decoration and a good solid feel in the hand. The pieces have the bonus of being free from engraved initials/crests. All 142 items within this service bear the hallmarks for Sheffield 1918 to 1920 by Walker & Hall.

The range of available pieces within this canteen is phenomenal, with some rare items such as the ice cream spades and seafood forks being a particular bonus. The range of serving pieces is equally impressive. The fish eaters and servers have bone handles with hallmarked silver blades/tines and the 12 pairs of dessert/fruit eaters have been made in the same manner, but with mother-of-pearl handles.

Knives were traditionally sold separately from spoon and forks and are therefore not integral to this set. We currently have 24 silver handled King's Pattern knives (12 table and 12 dessert sized) in stock that are an ideal match to this service.
