Antique Silver

60-piece Queen's Pattern Canteen, London 1840-82 by George Adams

We are offering a top quality same maker, Victorian period canteen in Queen's Pattern. All the spoons and forks within this service were made by George Adams of Chawner & Company. The offered service provides for 12 place settings, but we are able to offer a flexible number of pieces per place setting. Please ask if you require a  larger service.

A basic place setting consists of a table spoon, table fork, dessert spoon, dessert fork and teaspoon (60 pieces) Complementing table knives and dessert knives are an optional extra.

Queen's Pattern

Queen’s Pattern was first in fashion in the 1820’s and was named in honour of Queen Caroline of Brunswick (King George IV’s wife). There are several variants of the pattern, this canteen being in the most popular being with "anthemion heel". This term relates to the motif on the reverse side of the bowl and tines.

The highly ornate decoration found on Queen’s Pattern demands that each piece is made with a thick gauge of silver. The pieces in this service are indicative of that quality, e.g. the table spoons and forks weigh in excess of 3 troy ounces each.

The Maker

All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Chawner & Company and marked with the "GA" mark of it's owner - George W Adams. Chawner & Company were the premier silver flatware making outfit of the 19th Century. They produced some of the finest spoons and forks from their Hosier Lane workshops. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the finest quality likely to be encountered. A brief biography of Chawner and Company can be found by clicking this link

The Service

This 12 place settings canteen is attractively presented in blue anti-tarnish cutlery rolls. All the pieces are in excellent condition and have a good solid feel in the hand. One of the benefits of buying a same maker canteen is the future possibility of adding pieces that are an almost exact match in terms of size, proportions and pattern. We always hold a stock of pieces by this maker and would be happy to augment the size of this service on request. Furthermore, we are able to supply serving items by this maker and can forward details on request.

We are able to supply new Queen's Pattern knives to complement this service on request.
