52-piece King's Honeysuckle Pattern Canteen, London 1826 - 40 by John Harris and S Haynes & D Cater King's Pattern King's Pattern is the most well known and popular of the decorative patterns. It was based on an 18th century French design and became fashionable amongst the wealthy in the early years of the 19th Century. King's Honeysuckle is a highly cherished variant of the standard King's Pattern. The overall design encompasses a shell to both sides of the handle terminal and reverse of the bowl, scrolls down the handle shaft with a honeysuckle motif to the centre. The variant pattern has additional honeysuckle motifs down the front terminal of the spoons and the reverse terminal of the forks. The heel to the underside of the bowls is also in the form of a honeysuckle rather than the usual shell. The double-struck nature of the pattern (i.e. pattern on both sides) ensures that a good gauge of silver was used in manufacture. The Honeysuckle variant was only made in London where it was hand-wrought and has a high relief to the decoration. The Service All the pieces within this service bear the same engraved crest. The majority of pieces date from the Georgian period and are hallmarked London 1826 by John Harris - that is all the table forks, dessert spoons and table spoons (30 pieces). The teaspoons and dessert forks were made by Samuel Haynes & Dudley Cater in 1840 with some dessert forks from 1830 by Robert Hennell. Components This 52-piece service consists of the following:
