Tudor Pattern Canteen, London 1851-54 by George Adams
This is a superb quality twelve place settings canteen in one of the most
desirable and rare Victorian patterns. The gothic style Tudor pattern was first designed in
1850 in readiness for the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851. Each
piece within this canteen is not only stamped with a full set of hallmarks,
but also bear the original design registration kite mark for August 14th 1850
(i.e. the date the pattern was patented). Please see photo below for a photo
showing both the kite mark and hallmark. This variant of Tudor is also known
as "Scrolled Tudor" or "Tudor with Ears" - both names
referring to the stylish protrusions on both sides of the stem.
This is a same maker canteen with virtually all the items dating from 1854 (45 pieces), the remainder being from 1851/2 (9 pieces).
