30 piece Tudor Pattern Canteen, London 1854 by George Adams
This is a superb quality six place settings half canteen in one of the most
desirable and rarest Victorian patterns.
Tudor Pattern The gothic style Tudor pattern was first designed in 1850 in readiness for the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851. Each piece within this canteen is not only stamped with a full set of hallmarks, but also bear the original design registration kite mark for August 14th 1850 (i.e. the date the pattern was patented). Please see photo below for a photo showing both the kite mark and hallmark. This variant of Tudor is also known as "Scrolled Tudor" or "Tudor with Ears" - both names referring to the stylish protrusions on both sides of the stem. The Maker All the spoons and forks within this canteen were made by Chawner & Company and marked with the "GA" mark of it's owner - George W Adams. Chawner & Company were the premier silver flatware making outfit of the 19th Century. They produced some of the finest spoons and forks from their Hosier Lane workshops. Each piece was hand-wrought in the traditional manner and are amongst the finest quality likely to be encountered. A brief biography of Chawner and Company can be found by clicking this link.
