Antique Silver Spoons

128 piece Royal York Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1973 by James Dixon & Sons

 Pattern

Royal York Pattern was a pattern exclusively available to James Dixon & Sons. It has an attractive raised Tudor rose design to the front of each shaped terminal.

The Maker

James Dixon & Sons are a large Sheffield manufacturer producing quality silverware. James Dixon established his company in 1806, becoming "& Sons" in 1835. They produced an enormous variety of goods throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries and the company remained in the hands of the Dixon family until 1976.

Every piece in this canteen is hallmarked for 1973 with the JD&S maker's mark.

The Service

This extensive canteen is beautifully presented in a green baize lined wooden box. All the pieces are in superb condition and have not been engraved. Each piece has a good solid feel in the hand.

The quantity of pieces in this canteen will give the owner plenty of scope for choice and flexibility. There are utensils for fish and soup courses, main and dessert courses and even after dinner tea or coffee.

Condition

Excellent. All the fork tines are full length and spoon bowls retain their thick tips. There are neither engravings nor erasures. The canteen appears to have been seldom used (probably only for special occasions) and is therefore in fine condition throughout.

Presentation

This canteen benefits from being presented in it's original wooden box with individual slots for each piece. The canteen has been attractively laid out. The original owners must have opted for two extra table spoons and a pair of sauce ladles instead of a carving set, as these items are sitting in the carving positions in the top tray. There are two drawers and the locking key is present.
