Item: Card Case Description: The Royal
Exchange Hallmark: Birmingham 1844 by Nathaniel Mills Dimensions:
96mm x 69mm rectangular; 53 g weight
Comments: This is a fine quality Victorian
"castle top" card case with a scarcely found scene depicting The
Royal Exchange. The detailing to the building is of the highest quality
with the long line of Corinthian columns perfectly replicated and the
surrounding buildings of the City are visible to both sides. The condition
is excellent with engraved initials to the obverse and the hallmarks for
Birmingham's finest boxmaker are crisp.
The Royal Exchange is
situated in the heart of the City of London's financial district between
Threadneedle Street and Cornhill. Since it's inception in 1565 it has
been at the centre of London's financial dealings and is a symbol of
the City's importance to world banking and commerce. The building depicted
on the card case is the third exchange, designed by Sir William Tite and
opened by Queen Victoria in 1845. It still stands today.
