Item: Card Case/Aide de Memoire Description: Engraved
lakeside scene Hallmark: Birmingham
1850 by Nathaniel Mills Dimensions: 98mm x 72mm rectangular
Comments: An unusual form of card case with a
hinged clasp opening to reveal a dark blue (not light blue as shown in the
photo!) fabric interior. The interior has three pockets for holding
cards and note paper and a silver revolving pencil within it's own
slot.
The front fascia of the case is engine turned with a
central rural scene enveloped by floral scrolls. A man is working a wheat
field with a tree and farmhouse nearby and adjacent to a lake. The reverse
is similarly decorated with a central cartouche engraved with the initials
"E.F.P".
The hallmarks are spread between both sides in the
standard "Birmingham Box" fashion.
Furthermore, you may be interested to know that this
item was included
in the "Antique Masters" TV show aired on BBC2 on August 9th
2010.
