Item: Card Case Description: Royal
Exchange
& Warwick Castle Hallmark: Birmingham 1844 by Joseph
Willmore Dimensions: 98mm x 70mm rectangular; 83g weight
Comments: A very fine quality early Victorian
double-sided "castle top" card case. The buildings depicted are
both superbly chased in relief and are surrounded by a profusion of floral
scrolls. We have not previously encountered these two buildings on the
same card case. The condition of the decoration is excellent with neither
holes nor wear to detail. There is a little movement to the hinge, but the
case is essentially in fine order.
The
Royal Exchange is
situated in the heart of the City of London's financial district between
Threadneedle Street and Cornhill. Since it's inception in 1565 it has
been at the centre of London's financial dealings and is a symbol of
the City's importance to world banking and commerce. The building depicted
on the card case is the third exchange, designed by Sir William Tite and
opened by Queen Victoria in 1845. It still stands today.
Warwick Castle was built by William The Conqueror
in 1068 and overlooks the River Avon from its’ cliff top location. The
castle was owned by the Earls of Warwick from 1088 until 1978, the most
famous of which was Richard Neville (the 16th Earl also known
as the “Kingmaker”) who in the 14th Century imprisoned King
Edward IV within the castle. The
castle was converted to a country house in the early 17thC, however the
impressive four towered fortifications remain largely intact and the
castle has been a popular tourist attraction since the mid- 19th
Century. The view on this card case is of the East Façade from the River
Avon showing the main residences with Caesar’s Tower and Guy’s Tower
on the right hand side.
