Comments: A
fine Victorian "castle-top" card case depicting the Royal
Exchange, London in high relief to the front and an engraved coat-of-arms
with motto to obverse. Both sides of the case are chased all over with
scrolls. Excellent condition with crisp decoration.
The Royal Exchange is
situated in the heart of the City of London's financial district between
Threadneedle Street and Cornhill. Since it's inception in 1565 it has
been at the centre of London's financial dealings and is a symbol of
the City's importance to world banking and commerce. The building depicted
on the card case is the third exchange, designed by Sir William Tite and
opened by Queen Victoria in 1845. It still stands today.
The coat-of-arms
is for the White family and is surmounted by a martlet crest. The motto
reads “Vincit Qui Curat” and translates to “He Conquers who is
Cautious”.
