1836 by Taylor & Perry Dimensions: 95 mm x 65 mm rectangular;
84g weight
Comments: One of the finest examples of a
double-sided castle top" card case that you are likely to find. The
scenes from the homes of two British literary heroes are exceptionally
crisp and set within a beautiful swirling flow of high relief scrolls and
flowers. The case has a good weight and is in excellent condition.
Abbotsford House (photo to left), in the Scottish borders,
was purchased by Sir Walter Scott in 1811. Scott is one of Scotland's
greatest literary figures writing the classics "Ivanhoe",
"Rob Roy" and "The Lady of The Lake" amongst others.
Views of Abbotsford House were used to decorate boxes following the flow
of sentimentality after the death of Scott in the house in 1832. All
T&P boxes with this scene from the south court, date from the 1835/6
to1836/7 period.
Newstead Abbey (photo below left) is in Nottinghamshire
and was the ancestral home of the Byron family. The most famous family
member was the early 19th Century Romantic poet, scandal-maker and
revolutionary Lord Byron (1788-1824). His part in the Greek War of
Independence made him a national hero in Greece. The view depicted on this
card case is taken from the west front.
