Antique Silver

Item:  Card Case Description: St. George's Chapel, Windsor Hallmark: Birmingham 1843 by Nathaniel Mills Dimensions: 100mm x 69mm rectangular; 78g weight

Comments: A superb depiction in high relief of a rare view of Windsor Castle. The decoration on this castle top card case is extremely crisp throughout (see photo at foot of page). There is a vacant cartouche to the reverse side and both sides are covered in chased floral scrolls. In the corners, underneath the main scene are a daffodil and a rose. A wonderful piece of historical silver.

Windsor Castle was the principal residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Today, it continues to be one of the official homes’ of Queen Elizabeth II and is the largest inhabited castle in the world. The majority of English monarchs have lived in the castle at some stage and dating back to William the Conqueror (King between 1066 and 1087), is the oldest castle in continuous occupation in the world. The scene shown is a rare view of the castle's private church (St. George's Chapel) with The Round Tower dominating the background.
